Keep An Eye On Our Feathered Friends

Gympie Regional Council staff are urging the community to keep an eye on our Lorikeet population after a number of birds in our region had been found with Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome.

The syndrome primarily affects Rainbow Lorikeets but has also been reported in Scaly-breasted Lorikeets.

Affected birds are unable to fly, with varying degrees of paralysis of the hind limbs and wings.

In more severe cases, the paralysis may affect the whole body and the bird may be unable to blink or swallow.

Gympie Regional Council’s Parks Manager, Glen Fensom, said the debilitating condition is seasonal, and whilst relatively common, can be distressing for residents if they come across an injured or deceased bird.

“This summer we have had reports of some cases in our beautiful region,” said Mr Fensom.

“Early intervention and treatment by a vet or qualified bird carer can lead to a full recovery for our colourful feathered friends.

“It is a matter if just keeping your eyes peeled.

“If you see any sick or injured birds, please contact your local wildlife carer or call the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) so they can be treated by a vet as soon as possible.” Mr Fensom said.
