Supporting injured wildlife
Gympie Regional Council works with community groups that rescue sick and injured wildlife. Many of these groups receive funding from council.
If you find a sick or injured animal, please contact one of these groups for support.

Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome
During the months of Oct – June, it is not uncommon to find Lorikeet birds (especially Rainbow Lorikeets) on the ground dazed, confused or unable to move properly or fly.
This may be because they are suffering from a little understood physical condition known as Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome, or LPS.
There is currently no known cause to LPS. Experts do not believe LPS to be contagious to other birds or humans, however caution should be taken regarding contamination.
If you find a Parrot/Lorikeet that you think may be suffering from LPS or any other disease or condition, Council recommend you follow the following steps…….
- Call an experienced Animal Carer – Table of contacts above.
- Impacted birds are to be handled carefully with gloves, wrapped loosely with a towel, placed in a dark ventilated box in a quiet place until care can be sought. Dead birds should be wrapped in newspaper and disposed of in the rubbish bin.
- DO NOT administer water or food to the bird – if the bird is deemed suitable, the carer will administer care that may assist the bird to a full recovery.
