Water supply security
Gympie Regional Council and the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water (formerly) Department of Energy & Water Supply) have developed a Regional Water Supply Security Assessment (RWSSA).
The RWSSA provides a shared understanding of the capability of Gympie’s existing water supply system and its capacity to provide for future water demand in the city.
The RWSSA is intended to inform government departments and also to support council’s discussions with the Gympie community on its future water supply needs, expectations and options.
Rate notices guidelines
It is a requirement under section 138 of the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008 that a rate notice or account issued by the water service provider for the supply of water to residential premises, must comply with guidelines made by the regulator.
These guidelines have been developed to provide information to service providers who supply water to residential premises about the inclusion of standardised information and content on issued rate notices. Customer rate notices provide a good opportunity to further involve customers in water conservation and enables them to monitor their water use.
Private water supply
If you do not have access to the council water supply, and you are relying on bore water (groundwater) or rainwater for household use such as drinking, bathing or cooking, the following information may assist you in maintaining a safe water supply.
Gympie Regional Council provides a water sampling service for microbiological and standard water analysis for a fee.
Refer to our fees and charges here.
The microbiological analysis is limited to Escherichia coli (E. Coli) bacteria and thermotolerant coliforms, as indicators of enteric pathogens (faecal contamination).
Council recommends that customers commence treating their private water supply prior to requesting these tests.
Both types of analysis are performed by the State Government’s Forensic and Scientific Services Laboratory. Results are based on values prescribed by the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines 2011.
Residents experiencing problems with a private water supply may contact us for advice.
Mosquito-proof rainwater tanks are permitted throughout the region, and must be cleaned out as necessary.
Rainwater catchment areas and guttering should be regularly inspected and cleaned.
Untreated creek or dam water should not be used for domestic purposes (toilets excepted).
There are several reticulated private supply schemes e.g. The Palms and Nahrunda, which council has no control over. Water from the schemes is untreated and is considered not suitable for drinking unless further treated.
For further information please view the Health and Bore Water Factsheet and Health and Rainwater Factsheet.
Maps
Section 163 of the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008 (the Act) requires the service provider (Council) to keep a map showing both the limits of the service area and the location of the service provider’s infrastructure. It further provides that the map must be updated at least annually.
