Greenlight for council’s RV Strategy
After more than three years in development, the region’s RV Strategy was endorsed today during Council’s ordinary meeting.
Planning and Sustainability portfolio holder, Councillor Shane Waldock, said that while it has been a long time coming it was important to get the strategy right.
“The RV Strategy is not only about providing spaces for travellers to stop-over, it’s also about showcasing our region’s diversity and encouraging visitation in key areas,” he said.
“It has economic implications for our local towns and communities, so getting it right is important.”
The strategy focuses solely on low-cost and free RV sites on council-owned or controlled land. It aims to capitalise on the growing RV tourism market in a sustainable way.
The community was invited to comment on the final draft of the strategy during December 2021 and January 2022. This was in addition to the RV survey conducted in 2018 and 2019, which attracted more than 500 respondents.
“Seeking feedback from our community has been key to developing this strategy,” said Cr Waldock.
“We sought feedback from RV travellers, commercial operators, government and industry representatives, as well as the wider community.”
In its most recent round of community engagement, Council received 68 submissions. The feedback received has been considered and incorporated into the final strategy, as appropriate.
Cr Waldock said that the need to monitor and manage RV site usage, the provision of clear signage, and the promotion of local attractions and other tourist information rated highly with all respondents.
“This strategy provides a clear road map for establishing and maintaining RV sites throughout the region and I’m looking forward to bringing new and returning visitors to our region.”
