Gympie Regional Council is working to secure long-term water security for the region, with Council today endorsing the Gympie Regional Water Security Strategy (WSS).

The goal of the WSS is to guide investment and advocacy for water infrastructure and address the region's foreseeable water needs through to 2050.

Gympie Regional Council supplies water to more than 14,000 properties across eight townships and manages over 455 kilometres of water mains across the region, which is a network large enough to reach Rockhampton.

Mayor Glen Hartwig said it was vital Council continued to look to the future and recognise the ongoing challenges in providing quality water services to the region.

“Similar to other councils across Queensland, we are addressing the challenges of a rapidly growing population and aging water infrastructure that struggles to meet demand,” Cr Hartwig said.

"This strategy not only identifies key areas for improvement but also offers a clear roadmap for council and staff to secure the region's water needs. Additionally, it creates a valuable opportunity to advocate for support through synergies with State and Federal initiatives, such as Borumba Pumped Hydro.

"With this year's Council budget allocating a substantial $14.7 million investment in water and wastewater, the strategy will align with the vital work our staff are currently delivering and will provide foundation for future budgetary considerations.”
