Bouldering Wall Takes Youth Precinct To The Next Level

The Gympie Youth Precinct’s much-anticipated bouldering wall is nearing completion and is set to open by mid-June.

The construction of the bouldering wall was delayed when the contractor for the Gympie Youth Precinct went into liquidation earlier this year.

Gympie Regional Council's Manager of Planning Strategy and Major Projects, Chris Engle, said that following the liquidation of Ri-con, Council directly engaged the bouldering wall supplier to ensure the works were completed as planned.

“Bouldering walls have become a relatively common feature in parks, skate parks and youth areas around Australia so we were keen to ensure our newest facility included this feature,” he said.

The bouldering wall will create opportunities for an all-ages outdoor climbing activity that builds physical strength.

"It's expected that bouldering will grow in popularity with the bouldering discipline appearing as a Tokyo 2020 Olympic event."

“I’m excited to see our completed bouldering wall and believe it will be a big draw card for beginner- and intermediate-level climbers from both within and outside of the region,” Mr Engle said.

Over the coming weeks, the contractor will be putting on the finishing touches by installing the climbing holds on the completed steel structure and laying soft fall mulch. It is expected to be open to the public from mid-June.

The Youth Precinct project is a joint initiative of Council and the Queensland Government and was delivered thanks to $1.4M in funding under the Government’s Building Our Regions Program.
