Cherryl Chambers-Williams unveils her new exhibition, ‘The Goo-djee-ga - The Story that Flows Through’
Bring your friends to the Gympie Regional Gallery on Friday, 17 June at 5.30pm and celebrate with local artist Cherryl Chambers-Williams as she unveils her new exhibition, ‘The Goo-djee-ga - The Story that Flows Through’, which highlights the wonders of Australia’s flora and fauna.
Cherryl is a highly decorated local artist who has an Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts, Diploma of Ceramics, and Bachelor of Visual Arts with a major in ceramics. She won the Ceramic Award at the 2021 Du Rietz Art Awards hosted by the Gympie Regional Gallery. Cherryl uses art as a coping mechanism after she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) while studying her degree at Canberra University.
Cherryl’s new exhibition incorporates a display of small tea bowls containing images, messages of thoughts, hopes and dreams, which were etched by members of the community.
Cherryl says her ceramic work comes from a close affinity with the land where she grew up, the people and the stories they told.
“I grew up on a remote property in outback Queensland, and I suppose you could say, I ran wild, exploring the 12,000 square miles that was my backyard.
“This exhibition was inspired by the stories of this ‘wildlife’ all around us, the stories that weave around and through, and how we develop a 'sense of place', and what influences that 'sense of place'.
“Through the visual communication of art, I encourage everyone to come and view my exhibition to contemplate, re-evaluate and become aware of our connections to nature,” she said.
‘The Goo-djee-ga - The Story that Flows Through’ will be on display at the Gallery from Wednesday, 15 June to Thursday, 7 July.
The official opening is on Friday, 17 June at 5.30pm
