Be a part of the Memorial Park story
Located in the heart of Gympie, Memorial Park is an important landmark for the local community as a place of gathering, celebration and commemoration. In February 2022, the Mary River peaked at 22.96m, which inundated much of the Gympie Business District, including the Memorial Park precinct and bandstand, lovingly known as the ”rotunda”. As a heritage-listed site, specialist care is needed to repair and restore the structure, and this will take some time.
In line with councils Building a Resilient Region campaign, council has undertaken a creative recovery project to recognise the importance and value of Memorial Park and the bandstand to the community.
In 2021, the Gympie Regional Library created a book dedicated to Memorial Park. In order to share the story of Memorial Park with the community and visitors, the pages of this book have been printed onto large-scale panels and installed on the temporary fencing around the bandstand.
Council would like to invite the community to share their memories with photos and stories of weddings, high school formals, community events and ANZAC Day/Remembrance Day commemorations that will also be installed on the fencing for all to enjoy! We want to invite you to be a part of the story.
Photos, posters and stories can be submitted digitally by visiting https://www.gympie.qld.gov.au/bandstand-rotunda-project
Alternatively, if you would prefer to have your photos/items copied and returned to you, the Gympie Regional Library and the Gympie Regional Gallery are happy to assist.
