Gympie Regional Council Awards Bandstand Project to Local Builder

Back

The Bandstand, affectionately known as the Rotunda, holds a special place in the hearts of Gympie region residents. It has served as the backdrop for countless cherished memories, from high school formal photoshoots to moments of remembrance since its establishment in the 1920s.

Most recently, the Bandstand was inundated during the February and May 2022 floods, causing severe damage and prompting an extensive investigation into the repairs needed for this iconic structure.

The heritage-listed status of the Bandstand required a delicate balance of specialised care and state approvals, which contributed to the timeline for initiating the repair process.

Gympie Regional Council is proud to announce that the construction contract for the Bandstand was recently awarded to local builder ‘Suttons Building Solutions’, marking a step closer to its reopening.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor, Glen Hartwig, expressed his enthusiasm about the project.

"The Bandstand holds a special place in the hearts of our community. Its repair is not just about rebuilding a structure; it's about restoring local history and providing a space worthy of community celebration and remembrance. It’s an exciting step in our community’s flood recovery and we are thrilled to award the construction of this project to a local builder.” he said.

Scott Sutton, Owner of Suttons Building Solutions, expressed his pride to be working on the bandstand.

“Being able to work on the Bandstand, affectionately known as the 'Rotunda' and other flood repairs for council is an absolute honour and we endeavour to carry out such works with pride and respect.

“Gympie is in our blood, and we love being a part of this amazing local community” he said.

As part of the repair work, the Bandstand will be repainted using a heritage palette reflecting the original colour scheme.

The Bandstand project is being funded with the support of Environmental Recovery Program, which is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, in association with Gympie Regional Council.

Construction for the Bandstand project is scheduled to commence in January 2024, with an anticipated completion by late April 2024, weather permitting.
