Celebrate Australia Day at Memorial Park

Back

On Friday, January 26, Gympie Regional Council is inviting all residents to come together to celebrate Australia Day.

Official Australia Day celebrations in Gympie include the Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony and the Great Australian Bites event at Memorial Park, River Road Gympie, from 8.00 am to 1.00 pm.

There will be something for the whole family to enjoy, including a free BBQ breakfast prepared using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, live music, pop-up stalls, and cricket and giant games.

There will also be an appearance by Gympie’s Australia Day Ambassador Carmel Crouch. Carmel has worked for more than 30 years developing programs and services that provide people with a disability equal opportunities for employment, housing, happiness, health and well-being. Carmel was a Queensland Senior Australian of the Year nominee in 2018 and 2021 and was awarded 2021 Senior Citizen of the Year in the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig says this year’s Australia Day event will provide the perfect occasion for the Gympie region to come together and celebrate being Australian.

“This year’s event will be our biggest Australia Day event in years and will feature some of the best local food and entertainment to enjoy and sink your teeth into.

Australia Day is one of my favourite community events because I get to share the stage with some of our region’s most talented and hardest-working residents that have gone above and beyond to help others.

I am also looking forward to the Citizenship Ceremony as I will have the honour of welcoming those that will make the pledge to call our beautiful country home,” he said.

Entry to the event and all food is free.

Great Australian Bites Gympie is presented by Gympie Regional Council in partnership with the Queensland Government and National Australia Day Council.
