Gympie Regional Council dives into floodplain risk management study

Back

On the back of the 2022 Flood events and the recently adopted flood levels for habitable building works, Gympie Regional Council has embarked on a process to gain a better understanding of flood risk, the real cost of flooding to the community, and to identify options and opportunities to manage flood risk - both now and into the future.

The key outcome of the study will be the development of a whole-of-region Floodplain Risk Management Plan (FRMP) which will guide Council’s future planning and investment in flood risk management.

Gympie Regional Council Chief Executive Officer, Robert Jennings, encouraged the community to attend the community drop-in sessions to learn more about the project.

“Council has organised a number of drop-in sessions throughout the region. The sessions are an opportunity for you to provide council with your experiences and local knowledge on flood events in our region”

“It’s also a chance to see the newest flood modelling available. We now have detailed models for most of the river and creek catchments in the region, something we didn't have before. This data is going to help us all be better prepared for disasters and understand our flood risks more clearly.” Mr Jennings said.

Community drop-in sessions will be held at the following locations and times:

  • Gympie Library: Monday, 26 February from 9am - 5pm
  • Imbil Library: Tuesday, 27 February from 9.30am - 12.30pm
  • Goomeri Library: Tuesday, 5 March from 8am – noon
  • Kilkivan Library: Tuesday, 5 March from 2pm - 5pm
  • Tin Can Bay Library: Wednesday, 6 March from 9am - 12.30pm
  • Rainbow Beach Library: Wednesday, 6 March from 2pm - 5pm

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements and will be led by flooding specialists Water Technology and Synergy Solutions.
