Goomeri Hall of Memory to receive much needed restoration

Back

The Goomeri Hall of Memory is a state heritage listed war memorial and an imperative part of Goomeri history. The hall was constructed in 1926 to commemorate all those in the district who had served in WW1, and at an extension, those who served in subsequent wars.

During a routine inspection of the building, council maintenance officers identified deterioration of the historic building and grounds.

The Goomeri Hall of Memory Asset Renewal Project aims to restore the building exterior to its former glory. The works will include repairs to the external building, external paint finish, replacement of the dilapidated pine trees, installation of signage, security upgrades and restoration of the original coat of arms.

Councillor Hilary Smerdon said the Goomeri Hall of Memory Asset Renewal Project is a great outcome for the residents of Goomeri who have waited a long time for the hall to receive some restorative work.

“I’d like to thank the Queensland Government for the funding of this renewal project. The hall is not only an icon of Goomeri, but an important place of remembrance for those who have served.

“It is great to see the hall will be receiving some much needed TLC” he said.

The restorative works are scheduled to commence on Tuesday 4 May 2021, with the front façade and sides of the building to be completed in time for the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival. The works will be placed on hold during the festival, with public access restrictions and construction materials removed. Construction will start again after the festival with the finishing touches expected to be completed in early June.

Residents may experience construction noises; however minimal disturbance is expected.

The Goomeri Hall of Memory Asset Renewal Project is estimated to cost $127,000 and is an initiative by the Queensland Government through the Works 4 Qld program. Delivered by Council’s Asset Facilities Project Management team.

Council would like to thank the public in advance for their patience.
