During an intimate ceremony at the Pavilion today, surrounded by family and friends, Gympie Regional Council celebrated Kay Gibson and Raymond Zerner as the winners of the 2024 Senior Citizen of the Year Awards.

Held annually during Queensland Seniors Month, these awards honour one male and one female senior, aged 60 or over, who have made an extraordinary impact on the Gympie region.

Known for her commitment to the Veteran community, Kay Gibson has been an active member of the Veteran Rural Fire Brigade for more than 40 years. Recently appointed Group Officer for the Gympie East Group, Kay plays a key role in coordinating efforts across nine local brigades. She has also been a longstanding member of the Veteran Hall Social Committee, sharing her talents and leadership to bring the community together through events and fundraising efforts.

Raymond Zerner has been a pillar of the region for decades, with over 50 years of service to the Gympie Show Society, 41 years with the Gympie South Lions Club, and continued contributions to the Gympie Muster and Rural Fire Brigade. His unwavering dedication to these and other local organizations has inspired many to give their time and talents to strengthen the region.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig said local senior citizens are truly the backbone of the community.

“From volunteering and preserving our local history to supporting their families and neighbours, seniors play a vital role in holding our community together,” Cr Hartwig said.

“My heartfelt congratulations to Kay and Raymond for this well-deserved recognition, and a big thank you to all nominees who continue to make Gympie a wonderful place to live.”
