Tenders sought for landmark Civic Centre remediation project

A revitalised Civic Centre for Gympie is a step closer, with Council today calling for tenders to complete the construction of the much-anticipated remediation project.

As part of the tender, Council will be seeking early involvement from the contractor to help refine key elements of the scope and works, as well as the construction of the project.

Council had initially aimed to reopen the Civic Centre following the completion of emergency mould remediation and roof renewal in July 2023. However, during these works, further damage due to the storm event became evident with the building requiring more extensive restoration and upgrades. There was additional work needed because of mould damage, combined with the building's age and evolving construction standard.

Mayor Glen Hartwig said after a series of setbacks, it was good to see progress on this important project for Gympie.

“Our region has missed its premier cultural and performance space, and as part of this year’s Council Budget, we committed $6.19 million to progress its renewal,” Cr Hartwig said.

“This tender process marks the beginning of the project, which will include replacement and upgrading of building amenities including office accommodation, toilets, showers, and dressing rooms, a fit-out of seating and acoustic finishes, renewal of floor, wall, and ceiling finishes, and replacement and/or upgrade of a range of services including electrical, ICT, mechanical, fire hydraulics, AV and specialist theatrical equipment, lighting, and more.

“Council is now waiting on its insurance company to finalise its damage claim which was the result of storm damage and is also seeking external funding to help cover the final cost of the remediation.

“The community has been extremely patient as Council has worked through several challenging roadblocks that have set us back, but we’re excited to move forward and get a great outcome for this important asset.”

Tenders will be accepted until Monday 26 May 2025. A full scope and updated timelines for construction will be determined following the appointment of the successful tenderer.
