Kudzu

This week's weed is kudzu. It is classified as a RESTRCITED species. Kudzu is a perennial vine that grows rapidly and can reach 30m in length.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

  • Vine climbing up to 30m
  • Compound leaves with 3 broad leaflets up to 10cm each in width
  • Flowers are purple-pink, fragrant about 1-1.5cm long
  • Roots are fleshy and the taproot massive (up to 180kg)
  • Plants drops leaves in winter in South East Queensland.

WHY IT'S BAD

  • Outcompetes and smothers native vegetation and crops
  • Damages building and other structures.

LOOKS SIMILAR

  • Siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum) and glycine (Neonotonia wightii) - kudzu has much bigger leaves
