Kudzu
This week's weed is kudzu. It is classified as a RESTRCITED species. Kudzu is a perennial vine that grows rapidly and can reach 30m in length.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
- Vine climbing up to 30m
- Compound leaves with 3 broad leaflets up to 10cm each in width
- Flowers are purple-pink, fragrant about 1-1.5cm long
- Roots are fleshy and the taproot massive (up to 180kg)
- Plants drops leaves in winter in South East Queensland.
WHY IT'S BAD
- Outcompetes and smothers native vegetation and crops
- Damages building and other structures.
LOOKS SIMILAR
- Siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum) and glycine (Neonotonia wightii) - kudzu has much bigger leaves
